WENDY BRINGS LIVES INTO FOCUS IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD
Optometrist Wendy Dick is preparing her team to travel to Uganda in November with charity Vision Aid Overseas. Wendy who has worked for many years at Barraclough and Stiles Opticians and regularly attends the Bexhill practice. She will lead the VAO team with her Dispensing Optician husband David and another 4 Optometrists. This will be her 18th Direct Service Project with VAO and David’s 4th. Wendy first joined Barraclough and Stiles after working with Peter Stiles on a similar project to Malawi in 1993. They aim to improve the lives of thousands of people who desperately need spectacles to live an ordinary life. The project will last two weeks, from the 3rd November and gives Wendy the opportunity to use her skills to transform lives. Vision Aid Overseas is a charity dedicated to helping people who suffer from refractive error – short and long sightedness - who are unable to receive optical treatment. This is a problem that is extremely easy to take for granted. In the UK 16,000 optical professionals, working in 20,000 practices, service our needs. This makes needing a pair of spectacles seem an almost trivial ailment. In the developing world these services are virtually non-existent. The Vision Aid Overseas team will aim to carry out approximately 2,000 eye tests during its two week project and will then dispense spectacles that have been donated and recycled in the UK. By providing a pair of spectacles they are allowing children to be educated, parents to provide for their families and giving elderly people the opportunity to live with dignity. "It is amazing how easily we take spectacles for granted in the UK" says Wendy. "Even if you are short sighted or long sighted it is virtually impossible to consider your condition a disability. There are opticians on every high street in the country and almost nobody in the UK would ever go without. In Uganda many people, especially youngsters, are severely disabled by poor eyesight and I am very excited about the opportunity to help these people." For further information visit www.vao.org.uk. |

RETINAL PHOTOGRAPHY NOW AVAILABLE AT BARRACLOUGH & STILES At Barraclough & Stiles we are committed to providing you with the highest standard of eye care. With this in mind we have recently installed new Digital Retinal Cameras which allow us to take photographs of the back of the eyes - the retina. The image taken is similar to the one shown on the right, but much larger, showing the smallest detail. The procedure is comfortable and the image captured in seconds using flash photography - nothing touches your eyes. As the benefits of this service are considerable it is recommended and available to everyone. This worthwhile service lies outside the NHS so an additional fee will be payable.
