Contact Lens Director / Optometrist
Nigel was born in Hastings and started working unofficially for Barraclough and Stiles Opticians from the age of about nine helping out with light duties such as stamping forms etc. after school. It was almost inevitable that one day he would end up emulating his father in a more qualified way in the family business.
He studied for his ‘A’ levels at Eastbourne Sixth Form College finishing in 1981 and then Optometry at City University London (the same University his father had attended) graduating with a 2.1 Bachelor of Science Degree (with Honours) in October 1984. Since passing his finals in November 1985 he has worked at Barraclough and Stiles Opticians becoming a Partner and Director in 1986.
Nigel likes to devote time, care and attention to his patients and is well known for a very thorough, friendly and dedicated approach. He is based primarily at Eastbourne (but also works at Polegate) and has a particular interest in contact lenses, IT and sports eyewear.
Nigel lives with his wife, son and daughter in Stone Cross. Interests outside of work include Golf, Football, Skiing, Tennis, computers and gardening. He has also more recently become involved in antique spectacles with his father who is one of the leading authorities in this field.
Director / Optometrist
Surainder joined Frank Barraclough and Peter Stiles in July 1979 from City University as a pre-registration student. He then spent the next year working at Bexhill and St Leonards under their guidance and supervision. He sat his final professional exams and qualified in August 1980. Around the same the time the Battle practice was purchased from Frank Jones (who was in the process of retiring), so the working connection with Battle was established.
In the early 1980's Surainder was involved with an Optometry school in Rome spending 2 weeks a year for a period of 5 years going to Rome to teach Optometry to Italian students. He also took over from Frank Barraclough as the local Councillor for the Association of Optometrists, one of the professional bodies in optics.
Surainder became a Partner in 1984. He has tried to develop and maintain the ethos of the company which has always been to give the patients the same advice and treatment as you would a family member. There has been consistent re-investment over the years to provide a modern and a pleasant working environment with up-to-date equipment.
Surainder is interested in all aspects of Optometry, particularly contact lenses, dry-eye problems and children’s vision. However it has been the variety in the work, no two people are the same, which has made the job so interesting even after all this time!!
He lives in Bexhill with his wife and 3 children. Away from work Surainder enjoys golf, football and skiing as well as reading, watching films, listening to music and playing board games with his children as long as he wins!
Managing Director / Dispensing Optician
Jeremy started his employment at Barraclough and Stiles Opticians in November 1984 after finishing 'A' levels at Bexhill College. Having decided that he wanted to escape formal education, and start earning a living in a job with training and some future prospects, he applied for the position of trainee Dispensing Optician at the firm's Battle practice.
After working in the practice for nearly a year, gaining practical experience, he started the Dispensing Opticians course on a day release basis at City and East London College. After a three year course he qualified as a FBDO (Fellow of the Association of British Dispensing Optician) in August 1988.
Since becoming Managing Director in January 2008, and with the help of his fellow Directors and committed capable team, he is determined to build the business with a focus on providing the best optical customer service experience possible.
Although now based in the firm's central office in Bexhill he still has a hands on approach to dispensing and regularly works in all six practices. This helps to ensure that the company objective of "exceeding customer expectations by providing high quality optical services and products with a friendly and helpful attitude" is achieved.
Jeremy lives with his wife and three young boys in Bexhill. Interests outside of work include fitness and snowboarding.
