We are joining the World Sight Day Challenge during the month of October to help give the gift of vision to people in developing countries. Across our six practices in the South East we aim to raise £2000 that will help provide eye exams and glasses to children in developing countries who can't see well enough to learn at school. If we achieve our target we will potentially help transform over 700 lives through the gift of vision.
Optometry Giving Sight and Vision Aid Overseas, joint organisers of the World Sight Day Challenge in the UK, fund programmes that provide eye examinations and spectacles, train local eye care professionals, and develop vision centres that deliver long-term vision care to people in desperate need. There are 670 million people who are blind or vision impaired simply because they don’t have access to an eye examination and glasses.
"We are delighted to be a part of the World Sight Day Challenge in all our practices across the East Sussex" Said Jeremy Heynes, Director of Barraclough & Stiles "It's easy for us to take good vision for granted, so taking the World Sight Day Challenge is a great way to raise funds to help people who don't have access to even basic vision care."
Donations will enable Optometry Giving Sight and Vision Aid Overseas to fund more sustainable programs that provide eye exams and glasses to millions of people in need. Funds raised will be directed to projects in over 16 countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
Just £2.50 can provide an eye examination and a pair of glasses for someone in a developing country. We will be inviting our patients to join in and help transform lives in the developing world. For more information please contact us.

Colour blindness (also known as colour vision deficiency, or CVD) is thought to affect around 1 in 12 men (8%) and 1 in 200 women in the world. This means that in the UK there are approximately 2.7 million colour blind people (around 4.5% of the entire population), most of whom are male. This is due to the fact that the gene responsible for the condition is carried on the X chromosome. There are different causes of colour blindness.
The Colour Blind Awareness organisation was founded to raise awareness of colour blindness and they aim to be the first point of reference for people seeking information on colour blindness in the UK.
The organisation provides support for colour blind people, especially colour blind children and their families and also their teachers. Any profits made by the organisation are used to provide free colour vision testing in schools and to provide educational supplies suitable for colour blind students.
Whether you’re a parent or a teacher dealing with CVD, the official Colour Blind Awareness website offers a wide range of information on understanding the condition which can cause many difficulties in everyday life which people without CVD are not aware of.

Barraclough and Stiles Opticians are pleased to have been able to support the cyclists from pompey2pompeii on their intrepid journey of 1500 km.
After hearing about the charity ride in aid of AGSD (the Association for Glycogen Storage Disease UK) managing Director, Jeremy Heynes, managed to persuade their main supplier, Rodenstock UK, that it would be a good idea to help them in their quest to raise £60,000 by kitting out each rider with a pair of cycling spectacles from sports eye-wear specialists UVEX. The intrepid riders set out from Portsmouth on Saturday 10th September and had their official send off from Hastings on Sunday 11th. They hope to complete the three weeks after leaving Portsmouth.
In addition to supplying the eyewear all six Barraclough and Stiles stores are getting involved by donating any payments made for spectacle repairs or adjustments carried out "in house" to the charity between now and the end of September.
For more details of the charity and the pompey2pompeii challenge please visit the official web-site here: www.pompey2pompeii.org.uk or follow the official Pompey2Pompeii Twitter feed. One of the riders, Phil Astell, is also tweeting during the ride.
For more information about Uvex Sports Eyewear visit the Rodenstock website.
