[flexon twist image] IF YOU REQUIRE SPECTACLES

We will advise you on the best type of lenses for your needs and help you select a frame that enhances your appearance. For example, we can combine ultra-thin Hi-Index lenses with lightweight titanium frames - so light in fact that you'll hardly notice you're wearing glasses. Or perhaps you have a special requirement connected with your job or sport.

Spectacles are now a desirable fashion accessory and we stock a wide range of styles and colours including many leading brands and designer names.

As independent opticians, we are free to select the best lenses and frames from any manufacturer. This means we can offer you a wider choice together with personal service that recognises your particular requirements, lifestyle and budget.

There are many new developments in spectacle lens technology. Thinner, lighter lenses. New varifocals. A variety of special lens coatings. New types of light sensitive lenses and lots more - all designed to improve your vision and make your spectacles more comfortable to wear.

COATINGS TO PROTECT YOUR LENSES & YOUR VISION

Scratch Resistant: Most people choose plastic lenses because they're lighter than glass and less likely to break. However, plastic scratches more easily than glass. So to prolong the life of your lenses, we recommend a scratch-resistant coating.

Anti-Reflection: Removing reflections from the surface of the lens has several advantages. First, your vision will be better. Equally important, people can see your eyes more clearly as there are no distracting reflections to get in the way of direct eye contact.

An anti-reflection coating also helps to reduce headlight glare when driving at night, so your eyes will feel less strained. This anti-reflective treatment can be combined with a scratch-resistant coating for optimum lens performance and durability.

Tints & UV Filters: Excessive exposure to the sun's ultra violet rays can be harmful to your eyes and may cause long term damage. If you are at risk then a UV filter coating for your lenses is advisable. A wide choice of tints is also available to reduce the amount of light reaching your eyes and to make your vision more comfortable.

THINNER LIGHTWEIGHT LENSES
New Hi-Index materials mean that your lenses can be made thinner, lighter and better looking. This is especially good news if you have a high power prescription. Say goodbye to thick unsightly lenses.

VARIFOCALS: BIFOCALS WITHOUT LINES
If you require both near and distance vision correction, then you are probably presbyopic - a natural condition which many people experience in their mid-forties onwards.

One solution is to have different pairs of spectacles for reading and distance vision. However this can be inconvenient. Another option is bifocals, but they have a sudden change in focus and an obvious line across the lens.

Varifocal lenses are an increasingly popular alternative. Because they have a gradual change in their optical power, there is no jump between your near and distance vision. As a result, varifocals give you better middle distance focus as well as looking more attractive without the dividing line of bifocals.

Barraclough and Stiles are approved centres of excellence for Rodenstock Progressiv Varifocals but being independent we are free to advise the most suitable design of varifocal from any manufacturer.

LIGHT SENSITIVE LENSES
If you're sensitive to bright light or don't want to switch between spectacles and sunglasses then photochromic lenses are ideal. These darken according to the amount of sunlight, so you can enjoy comfortable vision both indoors and outside.

The latest generation of fast changing photochromic lenses are made of lightweight plastic and can be fitted to a wide selection of fashionable frames.

POLYCARBONATE LENSES
If your job or lifestyle demands extra protection from your lenses, polycarbonate is probably the answer. Ten times stronger than standard plastic, polycarbonate lenses are virtually unbreakable. They are ideal for children as well as activities such as squash, cricket and tennis (especially with a suitable sports frame).

VDU LENSES
If you regularly use a VDU screen and experience eyestrain, you may benefit from spectacles designed for VDU use. Under European legislation you could be entitled to an eye test and VDU glasses paid for by your employer. We'll be happy to give you further details of this scheme.
