How diet affects your eyes

A healthy diet is key to your overall health and wellbeing, including your eyes. Good nutrition helps our bodies to grow, repair, protect against infection and to function well.

There are various studies and clinical trials which show a link between antioxidant vitamins found in certain foods and eye health. The research shows that the vitamins help to maintain healthy cells and tissues in the eye.

The focus of these studies has been on vitamins A, C and E, which are found in many different fruit and vegetables including:

  • raw carrots
  • green peas
  • green beans
  • brussel sprouts
  • oranges
  • kiwis
  • grapefruit
  • dried apricots
  • tomatoes
  • peppers
  • green leafy vegetables including kale and spinach

Healthy foods can help your vision

They can also be found in eggs, dairy products, nuts, seeds and many other foods.

Eye health supplements are available which contain vitamins A, C and E as well as Lutein and Zeaxanthin, which is suggested to help lower the risk of Age Related Macular Degeneration.
